From what I’ve gathered here on tumblr, it seems that the “virus” that’s been going around is really more of a hack on your tumblr account that uses the randomly generated email posting feature. Changing your password won’t work because no where in the process of email posting does it ask for your password. They only needed to get into your account once to get that email. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never used the email posting before, it’s still there and usable.

I’ve posted easy instructions here on how to change the random email. I also recommend changing your tumblr password again after you’ve reset the email, and maybe even the email account’s password attached to your tumblr.

I am not an expert on these things in the least. I don’t know if it means there’s an actual virus on your computer. But you should be doing routine virus / malware scans on your computer anyway.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free and monitors / scans your computer for viruses. Malwarebytes is good for doing a deep scan about once a month. CCleaner is also good at removing unwanted programs and temporary internet files.

Anybody affected by the headphones spam should do this. Simply changing your password does not work.
